![]() There is something I like about pure synths (no samples) It is such a beautiful sounding synth and can make all sorts of sounds that Alchemy couldn't. I have Alchemy, Absynth, Massive and Zebra. It is fairly easy to work with considering its complexity. Longtime users here who can confirm or deny it?Īlchemy is excellent in that you can resynthesize sounds and use your own samples and audio to create sounds. Damn I really don't want to buy gear - I have enough, but this sound like the uber synth to me at the moment. Or is this only my first vivid impression? It's even moderate to the cpu. OK it's no FM synth, but besides this? I have the feeling that its very easy to design sounds from scratch with this. Mr.ergonomics wrote:I just used this synth the and my first thought was, ok I can chuck all my other softsynth away now (absynth, massive, zebra). Just my opinion, and again I use audio editing/effects/M4L to do a lot of what you could do with Alchemy so maybe you'd prefer it all in one package. A huge drawback I know, but it's still prefer it to Alchemy but that's me. ![]() Again very similar to Alchemy, except you can't load your own samples. It does have zillions of samples that you can use to program (48gb), everything from analog synth waveforms to ebowed banjo to light bulb filaments, as well as VA softsynth capabilities. They are both way faster than other synths because of this type of modulation system. They call it the "Steam Engine", very similar to Alchemy's modulation system but the interface has multiple pages so it's laid out a bit more clearly for me. Actually it's greatest strength is the way it's setup to create sounds from scratch. It's not a preset synth, although a lot of people probably use both Omnisphere and Alchemy that way. Especially Reaktor.Tarekith wrote:Have you tried Omnisphere? They're all extremely useful and dynamic tools. All I can say is don't dismiss NI's synths without spending some time with them. I do agree with Kays 100% though that Omnisphere tends to be a fatass in the mix, whereas the other two are *generally* not as pushy. Much of that is in the hands of the synthesist. I wouldn't give up either one, and honestly I don't know that it's fair to call one "warmer" or "darker" than another. Absynth is far less immediately intuitive, but it's monstrously powerful and all it takes is a brief romp through some of the better presets (under the hood) to get a sense for the incredibly complicated structures and routings you can create. Omni and Alchemy are both truly inspiring and are joyous to just pop open and program in. Of the three, I find Alchemy strikes the best balance for me between ease of use, interface clarity/depth, and versatility. I've been using Absynth for a long time and more recently added the other two (Omni, Alchemy) to my arsenal, and I'm not sure I agree with the dismissive attitude toward NI's synths. I see plenty of complexity, but little simplicity. Maybe I'm lazy / ignorant of what else is out there, but it's the Omni paradigm of having very simple basic controls at the top level, and the Orb for quick and dirty changes, yet each area can be mined at great depth if you want to get into it. ![]() In the end, I always end up in the same place, of being more interested in Omni expansions than anything else. Zebra might be worth investigating, but again from the demos there's not been a "must have" vibe for me. in that regard Omni seems to be almost inexhaustible with some programming and starting with the soundsource browser, whereas Absynth sounds "cheaper" and less organic to me. Dunno how to get that sound in Omni / Trilian, but there again 10-1 that reflects my own shortcomings) The synth bass as it drops down has an amazing quality where you hear the individual clicks that make up the sound, but they sound cool rather than horrible. ![]() (tangential for example of my need for something else - listen to this track at 1'02. Occasionally I'd like somewhere else to turn as an alternative, but I think it's gotta be as easy to use - I just don't have the patience! I hear Zebra gets a lot of love (and, hey, Zimmer uses it almost exclusively apparently) and Alchemy too - with the latter, again I couldn't get too excited about it next to Omni, though it seemed a good product for what it is. Everything else feels like a chore now, and usually doesn't sound so good. In the end it was Omni's ease of use and diversity that won the day. FM8 seemed pretty good - nevertheless I'd sold my Komplete upgrade 2 weeks after I bought it! Reaktor was pretty much an engineering platform, and an incomprehensible one at that. Very similar to my experience, similar response to Massive too.

Once the domain of clunky desktop platforms, cloud computing has helped to usher in a new era of fast, simple, and professional-looking invoices.īut with a choice between standalone apps, integrated software providers, or all-in-one business management suites, freelancers are facing the ultimate selection headache: which one do you pick? Chances are you already have access to one, so you're good to go.ĭo you have a favorite open source invoicing tool? Feel free to share it by leaving a comment.Freelance invoicing software has come a long way in a short space of time. To install and use BambooInvoice, you'll need a web server running PHP 5 or newer as well as a MySQL database. You can also run reports to keep tabs on your income. You can email the invoices from within the application or generate PDFs. It also lets you know which invoices are open or overdue. You can create and edit invoices, and BambooInvoice keeps track of them by client and by the invoice numbers you assign to them. What attracted me to BambooInvoice is its simplicity. But BambooInvoice is back, and it's as good as ever. When its original developer stopped working on the software, I was a bit disappointed. When I was a full-time freelance writer and consultant, I used BambooInvoice to bill my clients. OpenSourceBilling saves that information across all of your invoices, both new and old.Īs with some of the other tools we've looked at, OpenSourceBilling has a demo you can try. You can add items, tax rates, clients, and even payment terms with a click and a few keystrokes. You do much of the configuration on the invoice itself. Your information is broken up into graphs and tables, which makes it easy to follow. OpenSourceBilling stands out because of its dashboard, which tracks your current and past invoices, as well as any outstanding amounts. It has one of the cleanest interfaces I've seen, which makes configuring and using the tool a breeze. OpenSourceBillingĭescribed by its developer as "beautifully simple billing software," OpenSourceBilling lives up to the description. Or, if you're not quite ready to do that, take the demo for a spin. Grab the code and install it on your web server. You can also create quotes for jobs or goods, track products you sell, view and enter payments, and run reports on your invoices. InvoicePlane does more than generate and track invoices. You can also create recurring invoices for clients or customers you regularly bill. When you're ready, you can email your invoices or output them as PDFs. You can make them as minimal or detailed as you need. An old version of the code stayed open source and morphed into InvoicePlane, which packs all of FusionInvoice's goodness.Ĭreating an invoice takes just a couple of clicks. ![]() But that wasn't the end of the application. That didn't end happily, as FusionInvoice's doors were shut for good in 2018. One day, its creators took the latest version of the code proprietary. Once upon a time, there was a nifty open source invoicing tool called FusionInvoice. There's a free version and a paid tier that will set you back US$ 8 a month. Let's take a look at four web-based open source invoicing tools that are great choices for freelancers and small businesses on a tight budget. But the offerings on the open source side of the fence are just as good, and maybe even more flexible, than their closed source counterparts. There's a wide range of commercial and closed-source invoicing tools out there. Reminders about when to follow up on the invoices you've sent. It's easy enough to whip up an invoice using LibreOffice Writer or LibreOffice Calc, but sometimes you need a bit more.

When it comes to rum, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. Many believe that the rum, which Captain Black refers to as Double Charred Blackened Oak, was purposefully created to compete directly with the popular marketing campaign feature, the Kraken sea creature, and that the flavors of the rum are vanilla and cloves. Kraken Black Spiced Rum is created in Trinidad and Tobago using molasses aged for one to two years, which is then blended with eleven spices. The most popular cocktail made with Captain Morgan rum is the Mai Tai. Captain Morgan rum is a popular choice for mixed drinks and cocktails. Today, the island of Jamaica is home to the world’s largest rum distillery, which is named after Captain Morgan. He named the island after the mythical sea monster, the Kraken. In 1758, Captain Henry Morgan claimed the island of Jamaica for the British Crown. However, other forms of exercise can be resistance training as well. For example, there are many excellent bodyweight resistance exercises. If you’re regularly cranking out planche pushups, one-arm chins, or one-arm handstands, you probably don’t have to pick up a barbell anytime soon. To find out whether a particular exercise can be considered resistance training for you, find out how many repetitions you could do at most. If you can’t do more than about eight to ten repetitions, you’re in the resistance range. For example, if the max number of pushups you can do in one go is four, pushups are a viable resistance exercise for you. But if you can easily crank out twenty, pushups are an endurance exercise for you and you have to move on to something harder for resistance work. So why should you do resistance training? First, only heavy resistance training can actually activate and train all muscle fibers, including the strongest fast-twitch fibers. If you go jogging for 30 minutes, even at a pretty fast pace, you may feel tired afterwards, your legs may even be sore, but a substantial fraction of your leg muscle hasn’t actually done anything. By comparison, a single set of five barbell squats, at a weight that you can lift only about five times in a row, will have hit nearly every single muscle fiber in your leg muscles. Thus, you get way more exercise bang for your buck. ![]() (Incidentally, that’s why you need a few minutes break between sets of heavy resistance training. The exercises truly are that exhausting.) Second, there is better transfer from strength to endurance than the other way round. Once you have strength, it’s relatively easy to build endurance on top. But just because you have endurance doesn’t mean you can easily add strength. In simple terms, if you can do a one-arm pushup, you could easily acquire the ability to do 50 regular pushups in a row. On the flip side, being able to do 50 regular pushups doesn’t do much for your ability to do one-arm pushups. (If you want to see this principle in action, check out this video of a woman first squatting a barbell weighing over twice(!) her own bodyweight and then squatting a barbell weighing her own bodyweight 33 times. I’m sure she could easily do a couple hundred unloaded squats.) I would also argue that strength has much more every-day applicability than endurance. ![]() When was the last time you had to run at a sustained effort for 30 minutes, outside an organized race? At least for me, that’s not something I encounter frequently (or ever). But carrying five-gallon water containers from the car, putting my luggage into the airplane overhead bin, moving furniture around while cleaning the house, those are things I do all the time. And every bit of strength I have makes those tasks easier. As part of our monthlong series on hip-hop, today, we look at the way hip-hop and violence are intertwined. Then late last week, a suspect in the murder was also found dead - his name, Charles White his vocation, aspiring rapper. Just two weeks ago, in fact, up-and-coming rapper Rayquon Elliot aka Stack Bundles was murdered outside his home in New York. Both men were consummate artists in the prime of their careers, but they also helped change the game, infusing it with a deadly mystique. have inspired a generation of young rappers for better and for worse. ![]() Hip-hop and violence have long walked hand-in-hand. to both Chinx and Stack Bundles, senselessly taken far too soon. This is NEWS & NOTES. NYPD’s Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce called the investigation “long-term,” meaning it could be a while until we get any answers as to who was behind this deplorable and inexcusable killing. Other perhaps less meaningful connections were that they both drove Porsches and, at the time of their deaths, were both gearing up to release new music.Īt present, though, the case is still ongoing. Bundles had ties with Jim Jones’ Byrd Gang crew, while Chinx was famously connected to French Montana, co-founder of Coke Boys Records. In addition, both rappers had connections to other high profile artists. Chinx was at Brooklyn’s Club Red Wolf while back in 2007, Stack Bundles was reportedly at Stereo nightclub in Manhattan. So, what are the similarities in their murders? Well, both artists were at local nightclubs just hours before their deaths. The Resemblances In Chinx & Stack Bundles’ Deaths And I just think if a person commits a crime as harsh as killing, and they think they got away with it, they will surface and do it again.” “I really think they could be related,” Ulmer said. Speaking with the New York Daily News recently, Ronald Ulmer, the older brother of Stack Bundles, also thinks there’s likely to be a connection. The police aren’t the only ones who believe the murders could be linked, either. In lieu of them driving him around, the rapper solicited two of his security guards to drive in front of him, leaving Chinx to drive himself around that night for an undisclosed reason. “They were friends, so we’re looking at all hip-hop angles.”Īccording to the New York Daily News, police say that Chinx breached his security protocol around the time that he was shot. “They were friends, Stack Bundles and Chinx,” Boyce said. At the time of Bundles’ murder (which is yet to be solved), Chinx was serving four years on robbery and crack cocaine drug charges. Stack, whose real name is Rayquon Elliott, was gunned down near the lobby of his Redfern Houses residence in Far Rockaway, Queens in June 2007. Interesting developments broke later that day when New York Police Department Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce announced that his department is considering the possibility that Chinx’s death was connected with the murder of friend and fellow rapper Stack Bundles. However, the following day (May 19), the NYPD said that no arrests had been made and that the investigation was still very much active. On Monday (May 18), it was reported that the NYPD’s Elite SWAT team raided a house on 2436 Beach Channel Drive just hours after Chinx’s murder and took three men into custody. Since then, questions and speculation are rampant regarding Chinx’s killer(s).
